Multi-hazard Mitigation Plans
To date, Burke has successfully prepared MHMPs for nearly 250 municipalities and counties in the Midwest.
The Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA 2000) requires communities to develop a multi-hazard mitigation plan (MHMP). The intent is to identify local hazards; determine the extent to which they affect the community; and identify mitigation projects to reduce the social, physical, and economic impact of hazards. All National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) communities in the United States are required to prepare a MHMP.
Burke’s planning staff works closely with numerous NFIP communities throughout the state of Indiana to prepare individual and multi-jurisdictional MHMPs, as well as plan updates, including the first multi-jurisdictional MHMP to be approved and adopted in the state.
